Why “Do-It-Yourselfers” Need Freelancers
Why “Do-It-Yourselfers” Need Freelancers

If you’re anything like me, you probably grew up priding yourself on your independence.
Got bills to pay? Take care of it yourself.
Want that new iPhone? Work it into the budget.
Have a setback? Make a plan, and put it into action.
It’s you against the world.
Now that I’ve lived a little – survived my reckless youth, got married, had a few kids – I’m starting to see that the whole “rugged individualism” idea may not be all that it’s cut out to be.
Because doing things yourself doesn’t always position you to get ahead.
Especially when it comes to marketing your business.
Most business owners I work with are extremely talented, driven, and passionate individuals; they are people you want to buy from. People you want in your corner.
But when it comes to promoting themselves? Well, isn’t it true that the best out there often aren’t the ones who want to toot their own horns? They aren’t in business for fame and glory; they are in it to serve their people better and make some money in the process.
That’s where a freelance writer comes in.
Hiring a freelance writer to write your copy or content can benefit you by:
- Helping you delegate. For a sports metaphor: Put the right people in the right positions, and you have more of a chance to score.
- Saving you time and effort. Because we are all short on time, and as humans, we want maximum results with minimum effort.
- Helping you gain credibility by outsourcing other areas expertise to…an expert. Getting another set of eyes on your business, your current marketing strategies, website, and social media could allow for a different perspective, and potentially allow for additional strategies to maximize your influence, sales, or efficiency.
- Widen your influence. Hiring someone to write for you helps you put your best foot forward in a way that is engaging, client-centered, and tailored to your business goals.
Here’s a scenario, if you’re not already convinced:
Situation:A pipe breaks under your sink.
Dream world: “I could totally figure it out myself! I’m competent, I have tools, and I have youtube.”
Reality: You spend countless hours trying to diagnose the problem, searching for the right youtube tutorial, trying, failing, and potentially causing more damage. And then maybe you would figure it out, and then still potentially need to hire someone.
But don’t just hire any plumber. You hire one that isn’t just going to do patch work – you hire one that’s going to make your plumbing work how you want it to for a long, long time.
Back to freelancing – you could hire out some work through a freelancing site – Fiverr and Upwork are great for that. That won’t be a lasting relationship – one that knows your business goals, takes the time to listen to you and get to know your clients, one that sees all the parts of your marketing system so your marketing works how you want it to for a long, long time?
Knowing your own areas of expertise, your own limits, and what to outsource can be one of the greatest skills you master in your business (and in your relationships, and in your life).
And hiring a freelance copywriter and/or content writer for a long-term relationship- one that you can call for short-term work and longer-term projects- is an investment that will provide your business continuity, growth, and money.
So yeah. You probably could do it yourself. Go ahead and pull on those bootstraps.
Just make sure you have some beer in the fridge for this project – it’s going to take a while.
